Growing Confidence, Creating Memories: Celebrating Our Partnership with Creating Tomorrow
How hands-on farm experiences at The Countryside Kitchen are helping children and young people with special educational needs discover new skills, build confidence and flourish beyond the classroom.
When others tell your story, it means so much more!
At The Countryside Kitchen, we know just how powerful learning beyond the classroom can be. Every week, we witness those wonderful moments when a young person tries something for the first time, overcomes a fear, discovers a new skill or simply enjoys being outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment.
But when the organisations we work alongside take the time to share their own experiences, it really does mean the world to us.
We were absolutely delighted when Creating Tomorrow Multi Academy Trust published a wonderful article celebrating their recent visits to The Countryside Kitchen.
The Trust supports children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and we've had the pleasure of welcoming learners from three of their settings: Wren Spinney, Isebrook and Daventry Hill.
Their article, Growing Experiences and Creating Memories at The Countryside Kitchen, highlights the difference our workshops are making, and we couldn't be more proud of this growing partnership.
More than just a visit to the farm
Our Grow, Cook, Eat, Discover workshops are designed to connect people with food, farming and the natural environment through practical, hands-on learning.
During their visits, Creating Tomorrow learners enjoyed meeting our farm animals, getting their hands dirty planting bulbs, trying their luck at worm charming and discovering how everyday ingredients become the food on our plates.
They also made their own bread and butter, exploring where their food comes from before enjoying the results of their efforts.
For some learners, these might seem like simple activities. But for children and young people who face additional barriers to learning and accessing new experiences, these opportunities can represent significant personal achievements.
Stroking an unfamiliar animal, putting their hands into soil, exploring a new environment or tasting something they've made themselves can all help build confidence and encourage independence. Our workshops create opportunities to develop communication, social interaction, practical life skills and curiosity, all while having fun.
As Creating Tomorrow explained in their article, these experiences can be particularly valuable in helping SEND learners develop independence and prepare for adulthood.
Creating a welcoming environment for every learner
We recognise that every learner is different, which is why we take considerable care to ensure our workshops are inclusive, flexible and accessible. Before each visit, we work closely with teaching and support staff to understand the needs of the group, discuss potential challenges and identify appropriate activities.
We appreciate that visiting a working farm can feel unfamiliar or even overwhelming for some young people. That's why preparation, communication and flexibility are so important. Whether this means adapting an activity, providing additional reassurance, allowing more time to explore or adjusting our plans around the weather, our priority is always to make sure learners feel comfortable, included and able to participate.
It was therefore especially meaningful to read this feedback from Creating Tomorrow:
“From the pre-visit information and visit, to the delivery and aftercare is flawless.”
As a small not-for-profit organisation, we work incredibly hard behind the scenes to create positive experiences, so recognition like this means a great deal to our team.
The moments that make it all worthwhile
One of the loveliest things about delivering our workshops is witnessing the genuine enjoyment they bring.
Following one of our recent sessions, our Community Outreach Manager, Kelly, and I joked that we were suffering from smile ache because we had spent so much of the day grinning!
Seeing learners grow in confidence, engage with new activities and surprise their teachers with what they are willing to try is an incredibly rewarding part of our work.
And the feedback following the visits has been just as heartwarming.
One member of Creating Tomorrow's team shared:
“The staff and students can't stop talking about the visit, everyone had an amazing time with you both and enjoyed every minute.”
Comments like these remind us that the impact of a workshop doesn't end when the minibus leaves the farm.
The memories, conversations, skills and confidence gained can continue to influence learners long after their visit.
Why partnerships like this matter
The Countryside Kitchen, based at Orchard Farm in rural Northamptonshire, is operated by No Fuss Meals for Busy Parents CIC, a not-for-profit community interest company. Our mission is to make practical food education, farming experiences and opportunities to connect with nature accessible to people who might otherwise miss out.
Since opening in July 2025, we've welcomed more than 1,000 visitors through our gates, including schoolchildren, SEND learners, community groups and adults facing additional challenges. Many of the people we support have limited access to green spaces or opportunities to experience life on a working farm.
We believe that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, should have the opportunity to understand where their food comes from, develop practical skills and experience the benefits of spending time outdoors.
Working with organisations such as Creating Tomorrow enables us to tailor our educational experiences to the people who will benefit most.
It also helps us demonstrate the wider value of farm-based education, not only in supporting curriculum learning but also in developing confidence, wellbeing, independence and essential life skills.
We'd love to do so much more
Although the feedback from Creating Tomorrow has been incredibly encouraging, it also highlights a challenge we face. There is enormous potential to provide more of these meaningful experiences, but funding remains one of the biggest barriers.
As a not-for-profit organisation, we rely on grant funding, sponsorship, donations and our own trading income to help make our workshops accessible. Many of the schools and community organisations we work with simply don't have the resources to fund educational visits themselves, particularly when transport costs are taken into account.
Our ambition is to establish more regular partnerships with SEND settings, enabling learners to return throughout the seasons, develop their skills over time and build lasting connections with food, farming and nature. Rather than offering a single memorable day, we'd love to create opportunities for ongoing learning, confidence building and personal development.
Support from charitable trusts, businesses and corporate sponsors is essential to making this possible.
A contribution of £500 can help fund a workshop for a group of learners, providing practical activities, educational resources and experienced facilitation. Additional support can help address the cost of transport, ensuring that distance and financial disadvantage don't prevent young people from attending.
Thank you, Creating Tomorrow!
We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Creating Tomorrow Multi Academy Trust for their enthusiasm, trust and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for their learners.
A special thank you to the teachers and support staff who work so closely with us to make each visit successful.
We're thrilled that more visits are planned and look forward to welcoming further groups to The Countryside Kitchen.
Most importantly, thank you to the learners themselves for bringing so much enthusiasm, curiosity and joy to our farm.
You certainly leave us with plenty of wonderful memories too!
